Jos is an attorney-at-law with a focus on branding, design and advertising. He is experienced in advising and litigating on all areas of ‘soft IP’ law (copyright, design, trademark and tradename law) and has considerable experience of anti-counterfeiting measures and misleading advertising. A particular interest of his is effectively addressing online IP infringements against website owners and hosting providers. Jos is also regularly involved in drafting IP-related agreements (e.g. in relation to licensing and cooperations) and acts as a sparring partner in IP heavy transactions.
Jos has the distinction of having successfully taken on one of the largest trademark squatters in history and – through his expertise in generic use – helped to strengthen valuable trademarks of several clients.
Equally skilled in litigation and commercial advisory work of all kinds, Jos has experience in working for national and international companies in a wide range of fields, from food and beverages to media and telecoms, electronics, chemistry and financial services. Areas with a history of strong and innovative design – for example fashion, architecture, homewares and luxury goods – are particularly close to his heart. Whether he is advising a world-leading multinational or an exciting technology start-up, however, his approach is always to learn so much about his clients’ businesses, goals and needs that he can act as a long-term trusted advisor, providing practical and cost-effective solutions.
Clients also value Jos’s dynamism and tenacity – one describing him in an independent legal directory as ‘someone who will stop at nothing to secure a victory for clients’. Above all, Jos understands the importance to clients of having clear, authoritative advice, swiftly delivered and tailor-made to their challenges.
Before joining Leeway, Jos worked at a top-tier international IP boutique firm and a reputed Dutch full-service firm.
